As a kid who played video games, the first time I had heard of epilepsy was in a video game manual. It warned that images and animation may trigger seizures. It had always been consistently mentioned in life, if there were triggering internet pictures, video games, or flashing displays that could be potentially harmful. Now, many years later, I ask, what exactly is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is the umbrella term for any neurological disease that includes seizures. A neurological disease is defined as a disease that affects the nervous system. The nervous system consists of the brain, spine, and nerves altogether. Seizures are the electrical impulses in the nervous system being interrupted and causing a change in a body. Focal seizures take place because of abnormal brain activity in a specific area. The category of focal seizures include two sub-categories called partial or focal dyscognitive seizures.
In partial seizures, you remain conscious and may feel emotion or sensory changes in the environment. Focal dyscognitive seizures, as the name implies, creates unconsciousness and the inability to respond to the environment. |
